The Listening 5/10/07

Some random tracks that had the pleasure of being repeated more than once on the Ipod when I was supposed to be working. I generally bounce back and forth between decades and genres with reckless abandon, especially since music has gotten progressively worse as each second goes by (see: Dipset). Anyways, I quit listening to the radio a long time ago and for good reason (see: Dipset).

Goodie MoB-Thought Process and Soul Food: Probably the most underrated group evAR. I wasn’t a huge fan of the last two efforts, but when this came out in 1995, I think I bought it because I was infatuated with Outkast and I knew they were in cahoots with Organized Noise…good move. This album has never left my possession–never will. Socially conscious when it was scarce.

Gnarles Barkley-Storm Coming: I’ve been a fan of Cee-Lo since the beginning, but I wasn’t feeling this CD ’till about the third time I heard it. Eventually led me right into Danger Doom. Innovative and creative.

Rage Against the Machine-Bombtrack: Sounds dope on a nice system. Confuses other Black people when played loudly on the way to work. The stars have to align properly for me to listen to RATM, as I immediately look for something to burn down or someone to punch.

Little Brother-Beautiful Morning: I love anything that comes out of the Justus League right about now. LB might be my favorite group of the last years. They almost cancel out the plethora of shitty groups (see: Dipset)… Almost.

What a bad day to be a Mexican boxing fan. Not only does your hero Oscar De la Hoya get embarrassed in front of millions of people–but he loses on Cinco de Mayo to a guy who wore Mexican flag shorts and wore a friggin’ sombrero on his walk to the ring. Lame! I normally ignore boxing, as it’s ridiculously boring now and plays second fiddle to the genuinely diesel fighters of Mixed Martial Arts (PrideFC, UFC, ValeTudo, K1..)–but I tend to watch when Mayweather gets in the ring. I could give two shits about lame side stories about his family, this dude has the hand speed of a GOD. Oscar would swing once, and before he had a chance to miss his punch he got hit twice.

Ask Arturo Gatti, (below pic) who was the recipient of one of the worst beat downs I’ve ever witnessed. I saw that fight at one of KC’s finer casinos, and the large crowd there was VERY Italian, VERY pro Gatti (an Italian, obviously). I was in a small group of other loud, Black assholes and we laughed and pointed the entire time. Damn near turned into a race war in that joint…good times.

bitch!

Anyways, Mayweather certainly didn’t make any Hispanic friends with that sombrero he chose to wear, and the crowd was definitely pro-De La Hoya. . Damn. They cheered every time the ‘golden boy’ let loose a flurry of wild swings, in which one seldom landed the entire fight. What they didn’t seem to understand was that Mayweather simply can’t be hit. His defense was impeccable as usual, even though he NEVER had his hands up for defense. I actually think that De La Hoya knew he didn’t stand a chance. On the other hand, I don’t think he’s an idiot. He served as his own promoter, and ‘Golden Boy Productions’ ads were everywhere. Word is he made $25 million and Mayweather ‘only’ made $10 million. Maybe Oscar did win.

Regardless, that shit was hilarious AND I won five bucks.

ha!

some pics I took down the street from my house when bored recently. I had to wait for the dealers to finish their ‘transactions’ to get clear shots, but I think they turned out ok. I played with the shutter speed to add the ridiculous lighting in an otherwise deary part of town. Gives it a weird, ethereal effect….meh, who knows.

gouache-puppets.jpg

a BAD day for a puppet.

I got some rather unfriendly e-hate regarding my last post (Bush II), where people tried to tell me that there are no ’staged’ questions during Bush speeches. So, for your viewing consideration, I found the transcript to the speech that I was referring to. Here are the questions that came up from the crowd after the speech–you decide for yourself.

1. “In May of 2006, my second cousin was on his second tour in Iraq. Corporal Cory Palmer, he’s in the Marines, he was on patrol in a Humvee, and they ran over a roadside bomb. He and many others in that Humvee perished. What do I need to do, what does the media need to do to help you, so that my second cousin, and others like him, have not died or been injured in vain?”

2. “I’d like to know, like a lot of other people in this room, we have family members — we have family members who are actively involved in the security of this country in various ways. From them, we’ve received positive information that we consider credible, who say about the success and the good things that are happening as a result of us being in Iraq. I would like to know why and what can be done about we, the American people, receiving some of that information more from the media.”

3. ” What do you pray about, and how we can we pray for you?”

4. “You talked about the terror of 9/11, and what I wanted to share with you, my wife and I had our first child two months after 9/11. We named her Grace, because we felt that the world needed some grace at the time. And what I wanted to (inaudible) is the fact that our appreciation and keeping my family and also the families of America safe for the past five years.”

Unlisted were: “Mr President, what is cocaine like?” , “Mr President can you be more gentle the next time you bend us over?,” and ” Can you get those bumps checked out, because I’m starting to itch.”
