Stunned silence. That’s what I remember about the moment Chuck Liddell went down last night. I had my mouth wide the hell open like everyone else in the cramped living room we were in. It looked like the MGM Grand was eerily quiet for a moment as well…

I’ve been telling people since before Rampage took the title that everyone has a punchers’ chance and that anyone could be knocked out on any given day (given the right punch + right angle). I actually believe that. That’s part of the reason Chuck had been so unbeatable. He has the ability to throw power punches from what seems like impossible angles and put people’s lights out. But to say something like that and to see it applied to Chucks’ chin so perfectly are two different things. I never thought I’d see his knees buckle like that EVER. I didn’t know what to expect with this fight, and I didn’t even want to make a prediction beforehand. I certainly didn’t see Rampage winning by a knockout, considering Chucks’ striking skills and ring smarts.

Back to this room I was in. After the ’stunned faces’ wore off, I think a collective ‘WTF’ was the general consensus response. Everyone got on there phones to call their lame ‘i have to work’ or ‘my wife is having a baby now’ friends that couldn’t watch the fight.

Even the undercard fights were pretty good, although most of the fights were one-sided and went to the favorite. At least that was the case until Keith Jardine got his block rocked by Houston Alexander (above right, 4:1 underdog) in a mere 48 seconds in the first round. Alexander, who is an Omaha DJ, looked like a seasoned pro while he embarrassed the hell out of ‘The Dean of Mean’ Jardine. Quite the brutal knockout and quite impressive. I’m cerainly looking forward to more of his fights.

Yo F, Houston Alexander’s knock-out was the BEST KNOCK OUT OF THE NIGHT!! I can’t wait to watch Alexander’s next match up, the UFC brass needs to make that happen as soon as humanly possible. Was that a high-light reel or what?!?
Is it safe to say that Jardine was over-rated just because he dropped the excessively over-hyped Forrest Griffin.

There’s was nothing really surprising about Chuck getting rocked by Rampage. I was surprised that it was so early in the fight and quick but . . . these things happen. I’ve seen this mentioned on a couple of boards and I think it is true. Most of Chuck’s past fight after his last fight against Jackson were some-what tailored made. He fought grapplers, wrestlers and submission experts in Ortiz, Renato Sobral, Couture, Horn and Vernon White. I’M NOT TAKING ANYTHING AWAY FROM CHUCK because it could have easily been Rampage laying on his back Saturday night. But, I’m just saying, the fight was a better match-up for Rampage style.
Next up for Liddell will be Wanderlei Silva! That’s going to be a fight! Both fighters coming off a loss and a knockout. Can Rampage handle Dan Henderson? More importantly will he be prepared to defend against shoots, the clinch and knees a-la-Shogun and Silva. We will see.

And how long before Tito asks Dana to fight Rampage that is if he can convincingly get through Rashad Evans.

For real, Alexander looked like a machine out there. I seriously hope he’s not some flash in the pan and hopefully he was signed to a better than 3 fight contract. That was BY FAR the best KO I’ve seen in a while..Jardin was asleep before his head met the mat. I mean, Houston rocked him off his feet at least FOUR consecutive times then repeatedly held on to him to continue the beating. (that uppercut was amazing)

You’re right, most of his fights have been against fighters who only feel comfortable on the ground and are hesitant to throw hands with any certainty they can produce a KO.

From what I’ve watched of Henderson–that should be an excellent fight but I’d have to take Henderson to win it (hesitantly). He’s an incredible fighter (but so was Chuck). Also, Rampage probably wants no parts of Wanderlei..at least until he figures out a better strategy.

Tito bores me. Rampage would dispatch of him rather easily.
